Yield:
Serves 6-8

Prep Time:
10 minutes

Cooking Time:
8 hours

Ingredients:

  • 2 racks Ontario side ribs (about 3 lb/1.5 kg total)
  • 1 tbsp (15 mL) Montreal steak spice
  • 1/2 tsp (2 mL) pepper
  • 1/2 tsp (2 mL) salt, divided
  • 1 cup (250 mL) water
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, sliced
  • 1/3 cup (75 mL) fancy molasses
  • 1/3 cup (75 mL) cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup (60 mL) Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 tsp (2 mL) garlic powder

Cooking Instructions:

  1. Remove membrane from back of ribs of each rack. Cut each rack into 2 or 3 rib portions and place in slow cooker.
  2. Toss with steak spice, pepper and a pinch of the salt.  Add water and sprinkle onion and garlic all over.
  3. Cover and cook on LOW for 8 hours or on HIGH for 4 hours. Remove ribs and discard liquid mixture from slow cooker.
  4. In a bowl, whisk together molasses, vinegar, mustard, garlic powder and remaining pinch of salt.
  5. Toss ribs with sauce and place on foil-lined baking sheet. Set broiler to High and place rack about 6 inches (15 cm) from broiler.
  6. Baste ribs with more sauce and broil for about 3 minutes. Baste again and broil for about 3 minutes or until golden and blistered. Serve ribs with any remaining sauce for dipping, if desired.
