Simple Sloppy Joe Recipe

Make tonight's dinner easy: juicy Sloppy Joe recipe ready in 30 minutes. Saucy, a little sweet, family approved. Load on some kaisers and dig in!

Yield: Serves 4
Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 18 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb (454 g) lean ground Ontario pork
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tsp (10 mL) Italian seasoning
  • 1/4 tsp (1 mL) hot pepper flakes
  • 1 tbsp (15 mL) canola oil
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 1/4 tsp (1 mL) salt
  • 1 can (398 mL) tomato sauce
  • 1/3 cup (75 mL) barbecue sauce
  • 4 kaiser buns,
  • 1/2 cup (125 mL) shredded mozzarella (optional)

Cooking Instructions:

  1. In a bowl, combine pork with garlic, Italian seasoning and hot pepper flakes; set aside.
  2. In a large non-stick skillet, heat oil over medium heat and cook onion and pepper for about 3 minutes or until softened. Add pork mixture and salt; cook, breaking up with spatula for about 6 minutes or until no longer pink.
  3. Stir in tomato sauce and barbecue sauce and bring to a simmer. Simmer, stirring often for about 8 minutes or until thickened slightly.
  4. Place bottom halves of buns onto plates and top with sloppy joe mixture. Sprinkle with cheese, if using. Sandwich with top bun to serve.

Tip: Use this mixture to spread over oven baked fries and sprinkle with cheese for a delicious new “sloppy” fries dinner idea.
